Animal Therapy To Treat Depression
By editor | July 16, 2007
Many people these days are discovering the positive affects of interacting with animals and pets. Animals like dogs, cats, parrots and even fish have been proven to create a happy and joyous environment in homes. Some people suffering from depression like to be treated with medication alone while some just want some alternate form of treatment because they don’t want to use only the chemical forms of treatment. Animals can be very effectively used to treat various problems and depression is one of them. Among pets dogs are the most effective in treating depression because they are one of the most interactive and affectionate animals around.
People also tend to keep pets for fun but they are unaware of the fact that pets act as natural antidepressants and help cure depression naturally. Pets like cats and birds also help cure depression because the person feels a sense of responsibility towards his pets like feeding them regularly, taking them out for a walk and taking care of its cleanliness and its wellness. The sense of touch of the pets can be very assuring for the depressed person knowing the fact that they are unconditionally love by someone, be it an animal. The affection and love of the pets can cheer up a depressed person emotionally and bring about great improvement in their emotional and mental health.
The time a person spends interacting with a dog is equivalent to the time spent in therapy and counseling and is in a way better than therapy because a person is unaware of the fact that it is a kind of treatment and will help him recover faster. In some cases the pets are
also specially trained to help the person recover by activities like licking or urging the owner to play with them. Dogs can be specially trained to help people recover from problems like depression a lot faster than medicines and therapy can. They can also improve a person’s socializing skills by making him interact with them through the day and preventing them from isolating themselves. They also help regain the focus and bring down anxiety levels by diverting the mind from the illness to other activities.
