Depression Terms

Depression in common terms can be referred to a state of melancholia i.e. a state of sadness or unhappiness. Today 8 out of 10 people in the world suffer from this syndrome. Depression is that state of mind which everyone experiences in their life at some or the other point of time in their lives. Everybody has their own reason for depression, whether it is from breakup of a relationship or losing a precious thing. Depression spoils the balanced state of a person’s mind into an unbalanced state. It can cause a drastically change in a person’s nature and the way how he/she behaves socially. The rate of people going into depression is rapidly increasing yearly.

Depression can be caused by four basic factors. They are psychological, hereditary, genetic, or environmental. Psychological depression maybe caused by losing a precious thing or a person. If it is due to death of some person in the family then it is called mourning. It is quite common in most of the families all over the world. Hereditary depression is a state of sadness which is passed on to generations. It can also skip generations but then it comes again in the next generations. So this is kind of tricky. Genetic depression is caused due to lack of serotonin and norepinephrine, two chemical substances produced by brain to keep the mind in balanced state. Inadequate quantities of these substances result in genetic depression. Environmental depression is caused due to seasonal changes. Here change in season plays an important role in a person’s life contributing to his/her depression. Environmental depression is also known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D).

Depression can be of several types. It is mainly classified as –

Manic depression includes extremity of moods. It can range from extreme happiness toDepression Terms severe sadness. A person who feels very happy suddenly goes into shock and feels sadness. This shows he’s suffering from manic depression. Clinical depression is a syndrome in which a person suffers from extreme sadness. The level of sadness is so high that it affects a person’s social behavior. It is just like the normal depression which people suffer in their daily lives but the small difference is that in this case the level of the sadness is quite high. Premenstrual syndrome and postpartum depression can only occur in females. Premenstrual syndrome occurs due to hormonal changes before their menstruation occurs. Postpartum depression occurs after a woman gives birth to her child.

Many people suffering from depression do not want to believe that they are suffering from the same. They think that they are perfectly all right and need no medical attention. People suffering from depression can be treated in a number of ways. Some of the methods for their treatment are drug prescription, hospitalization and shock treatment
