Many people in this world feel depressed in one or the other way. Depression is stated as a disorder because it includes malfunctioning of body part i.e. brain and moods and thoughts. During this phase, the brain suffers from an unbalanced state and the person is not able to think how to handle with the situation. It can be caused due to loss of some precious thing to a person. It can cause severe damage to the depressed person if the case becomes extreme. According to the statistics over 16% of the world’s population is affected by this syndrome. A study by World Health Organization reveals that depression is the leading factor which gives rise to disability among the people.

Depression is a disorder which affects mind and body in a number of ways. It has many symptoms. They include loss of energy and lack of concentration. Other symptoms include sadness, anger and frustration. Extreme cases can lead the victim to attempt suicide. Depression can be caused by an unbalanced state of mind or some physical factor. These physical factors include an improper digestive system; improper blood flow in the body, too much exertion etc. It can also be caused genetically. The substances produced in brain to keep the status of mind balanced are not produced in required amounts. This leads to depression. It can also be caused due to sudden changes in the environment.

Depression can be of several types. They are manic depression, clinical depression, postpartum depression and premenstrual depression. Manic depression is an extremity of moods. A person can suffer from severe sadness to sheer happiness. Clinical depression is a severe case of depression in which the patient needs to be attended by a doctor or a psychiatrist. Premenstrual and postpartum depressions only occur in females. Premenstrual depression occurs due to hormonal changes in the female body prior to menstruation. Postpartum depression occurs after a woman has given birth to a child. Her body undergoes some hormonal changes due to which depression occurs.Depression

People suffering from depression can be treated well before the case becomes severe. Depression can be detected by seeking the symptoms in a person. The person then can be treated with the suitable treatment. There are several ways in which a person can be treated. In a therapy process, the person is exposed to a therapist who advices the patient to balance his thoughts. The depressed person can also consult a doctor and prescribe suitable drugs to deal with different cases of depression. People are often hospitalized so that they do not hurt themselves being influenced by their own depression. Proper care is taken for them. In severe cases shock treatment is also used. The patient is given electric shocks to let out the internal shocks which are caused by the depression.
