For obese individuals losing weight is an issue of primary concern especially keeping in mind the various harmful effects of obesity and its effects on the human body. In case of determining obesity a very significant role is played by the body mass index, usually indicated as the BMI which is calculated as a percentage obtained by proportionately measuring the height of a person and his corresponding weight. It is interesting to note that weight loss surgical procedures are usually advised to people who are immensely obese and therefore those having a body mass index of over 30 or even 40 are suitable for surgery. It is to be noted here that liposuction is not usually referred to as a form of weight loss surgery and is primarily regarded as a form of surgical procedure which enables one to get rid of the excess fat deposits that accumulate in different parts of the body notably in the abdomen region, thighs, necks etc. However it is evident that liposuction therefore can act effectively in aiding weight loss. An important precondition that is to be borne in mind in case of opting for liposuction is that an individual should go for liposuction only after all other weight loss programs have failed to produce the desired results.

Liposuction is a form of cosmetic surgery and it makes use of two essential devices in course of the surgical procedure. These include a suction device which is known as aspirator and most importantly the cannula which is a hollow tube. There are various different weight loss methods of liposuction practiced and these methods are known to effectively aid in the loss if the accumulated body fat. The most prevalent form of liposuction is popularly known as the suction-assisted liposuction or SAL and this involves the suction of the fat cells by inserting a suction tube in the areas where excess fat has been deposited in the body. Laser assisted liposuction has been sanctioned only recently by the US FDA and it makes use of laser technology and is considered to be appropriate for complex surgical procedures. Ultrasound assisted liposuction or UAL is also referred to as ultrasonic liposuction and it functions by first blending and then liquefying the fats which make it easier to have them sucked out. Power-assisted liposuction makes use of mechanical processes and therefore there is very minimal manual intervention necessary in its functioning. There is also another form known as water-assisted liposuction but it has not yet been approved by the FDA.
